Upcycled Button Down Dress

MATERIALS
*Caron Simply Soft or other worsted weight yarn to meet gauge
*Button down shirt- the size modeled is a woman’s size small, but you can use any size, even a mans large, it would just be more ruffled
*G/6/4.0mm hook or hook needed to obtain gauge
*Yarn Needle
*Scissors
*Pins

hdc = half double crochet

NOTES
*Written in size 2 with size 4 instructions in parenthesis
*Final stitch counts for size 2 in parenthesis with final stitch count for size 4 in brackets.
*For gauge purposes: one stitch set is: *hdc, CL, sk 1, CL*.

SPECIAL STITCHES  
Cluster (CL) – *YO, insert hook in st and draw up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loopps; repeat from *2 more times in same st, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Row 3. Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *2 sc, sc x 2* across, turn (77)[85]
Row 4. Repeat row 2
Row 5. Repeat row 3
Row 6 – 7. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (77)[85]
Row 8. Repeat 2
Row 9. Repeat 3
Row 10. Repeat 2
Row 11. Repeat 3
Row 12 – 13. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (77)[85]
Row 14. Repeat row 2
Row 15. Repeat row 3
Row 16. Repeat row 2
Row 17. Repeat row 3 FASTEN HERE FOR SIZE 2 (leaving long tail for sewing), CONTINUE FOR SIZE 4

Row 23. Repeat row 3. FASTEN (leaving long tail for sewing).

FINISHING
*Sew halter along short edges to close band.
*Lay shirt flat and cut in a straight line from armpit to armpit leaving a 1” gap over the top button.
*Place 1” of shirt inside bottom edge of halter and pin so that the buttons are front & center. Sew shirt and halter together.
*Cut 7.5”(8”) straps from the sleeves of the shirt. Sew to the front of the dress so they are 4”(4.5”) apart or 2”(2.25”) from the center. Repeat on the back.
