Flowers: Bobbles, Popcorns, and Puffs

I love adding texture to my crochet pieces. I think it makes them more interesting and fun! Some of my favorite stitches are Bobbles, Popcorns, and Puffs!

Lots of people don't know the difference between these stitches, and since I love them so much, I'm going to teach you!

This is part of the New Year, New Skills crochet along hosted by CAL Central Crochet on Facebook. Join the group to participate!

I created these cute little flowers to show you and they're so small, they're great for practicing with! The flowers are exactly the same, except for the raised center stitches.

BOBBLE
A bobble is actually a double crochet cluster stitch. The more double crochets you add to one space, the more the bobble will pop. Typically a bobble is worked with a standard of, and no less than, 5 double crochet (any less and it doesn't really raise up).

To Make a Bobble: *YO, insert hook in stitch indicated, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through two loops on hook* 5X, YO, pull through all loops on hook.

BOBBLE FLOWER
With Color A,
1. Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc)
2. Ch 1, (sc, bobble, ch 1) in each stitch around, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc, 6 bobbles)
With Color B,
3.Starting in same space as join: Ch 1, (hdc, trc x 5, hdc) in each sc arnd, sl st to join in 1st hdc. Fasten. (6 petals)

POPCORN
A popcorn is a variation of a shell stitch, if you will. You work several complete double crochet stitches in one space, then you join the last stitch to the first stitch to "roll it up" and make it raise up.

To Make a Popcorn: Work 5 dc in space indication, remove hook from current working loop, insert it into the top of the 1st dc created, insert it into the working loop of the 5th dc (going behind the 5 dcs), and pull the working loop through the top of the 1st st.

POPCORN FLOWER
With Color A,
1. Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc)
2. Ch 1, (sc, popcorn, ch 1) in each stitch around, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc, 6 popcorns)
With Color B,
3. Starting in same space as join: Ch 1, (hdc, trc x 5, hdc) in each sc arnd, sl st to join in 1st hdc. Fasten. (6 petals)

----------

PUFF
A puff stitch is a unique stitch, as it doesn't resemble anything else. You yarn over, insert your hook in stitch indicated, and draw up a loop any number of times. I happen to find lots of fun and I have used it a lot in my designs.

To Make a Puff: YO, insert hook in stitch indicated, YO, draw up a loop* 5X, YO, draw through all loops on hook.

PUFF FLOWER
With Color A,
1. Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc)
2. Ch 1, (sc, puff, ch 1) in each stitch around, sl st to join in 1st sc (6 sc, 6 puffs)
With Color B,
3.Starting in same space as join: Ch 1, (hdc, trc x 5, hdc) in each sc arnd, sl st to join in 1st hdc. Fasten. (6 petals)

For any of these stitches, you can really play around with different stitches (try using hdc instead of dc, do 7 sts instead of 5... etc). The finished look can vary greatly depending on how you work them. The more stitches you add to one space, the higher the pop will be!
