Blackstone Designs: Arboretum Square

The center of this square starts off differently than the Botanical Garden Square, but they finish the same. This makes these squares the perfect match.

The Botanical Garden Square was designed for the 2017 Moogly CAL. This Arboretum Square can be used as an alternate.

MATERIALS

Square should measure approx. 3 ¾” after round 4.

FINISHED MEASUREMENT

11.5” x 11.5” – Block to 12”

ehdc = See Special Stitches

sl st(s) = slip stitch(es)

TLO = See Special Stitches

WRITTEN IN US TERMS

Beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch

Each round starts in the same space as join

Each round lists the needed color for a four-tone square. Any color arrangement can be used.

Extended half double crochet (ehdc) = YO, insert hook in stitch indicated, draw up a loop, YO draw through 1st loop only, YO, draw through all 3 loops.

Third Loop Only (TLO) = Working in the loop that runs parallel to the backside of a hdc. AKA Camel Stitch.

With Color A,

1. Magic Ring, ch 1, *3 ehdc, ch 1* 4X, sl st to join in 1st ehdc (12)

With Color B,

2. Ch 1, TLO: *2 sc in 1st ehdc, sc in next, 2 sc in next, ehdc in ch-1 sp* 4X, sl st to join in 1st sc (24)

With Color C,

3. Ch 1, *2 ehdc in 1st sc, ehdc x 3, 2 ehdc, ch 2, sk ehdc* 4X, sl st to join in 1st ehdc (28)

With Color D,

4. Ch 1, TLO: *2 sc in 1st sc, sc x 5, 2 sc in next, 2 ehdc in ch-2 sp* 4X, sl st to join in 1st sc (44)

With Color A,

5. Ch 1, *2 ehdc, ehdc x 7, 2 ehdc, ch 2, sk 2 ehdc* 4X, sl st to join in 1st ehdc

With Color B,

6. Ch 1, TLO: *2 sc in 1st ehdc, sc x 9, 2 sc in next, 3 ehdc in ch-2 sp* 4X, sl st to join in 1st sc

With Color C,

With Color D,

16. Ch 1, sc x 14, 3 sc in corner st, *sc x 37, 3 sc* 3X, sc x 23, sl st to join in 1st sc; Fasten. (156)

Hide strings using yarn needle.
